Before you go shopping for a sconce light be sure you understand some of basic rules of lighting then you will be able to pick the perfect sconce light for turning your house into a home.

Down lighting, up lighting and feature lighting are all terms that you will come across again and again. Downlighting is found in most modern homes as it is a very efficient source of light. It is usually recessed into ceilings and works well in most situations although it can make small spaces appear even smaller. Uplighting as the name suggests directs the light towards the ceiling and thus can create an illusion of space. When used in conjunction with pale colored ceilings they can be very effective at lighting a whole room. Up lighters can come in many forms from free standing to wall mounted.

Feature lighting, as the name suggests, is used to highlight a specific feature in your home. This could be a picture or a piece of sculpture or even a fireplace. Usually you would decide on the general lighting in a room first before adding in the feature effects. It works best when the eye is drawn to the actual picture or piece on display rather than the light source.

Regardless of what style of sconce light you choose, you should always add in as much control as possible. Dimmer switches will allow you to put the lights onto maximum effect when required but tone them down when you are trying to create a specific atmosphere. It also makes sense to have different controls for the various lighting effects i.e. a dimmer switch for the main lights and a separate one for any feature lighting you have included in the room.

There are various sources of lights as well that you can use in a home. They include fluorescent bulbs which are generally found in bathrooms and kitchens although this may not be the most appropriate type of light for these areas. A tungsten filament bulb is used in most table lamps as it produces a warm and inviting light as a result of producing a mixture of heat and light. Low voltage tungsten halogen lights are common in modern homes.
